Resolution 2003.01 Affordable Housing for Low-Income Canadians

Whereas, Article 25 (1) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, in part, “everyone has the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control;” and

Whereas, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has defined homelessness as including those “at risk” and “hidden” whose tenure is threatened by rents that exceed a reasonable portion of their income; and

Whereas, There is still a shortage of adequate, affordable housing for homeless and low-income Canadians, even though governments at all levels have increased funding; therefore, be it

Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 83rd annual national convention assembled, urge the minister responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation to further increase funding for adequate, affordable housing for low-income persons; and, be it further

Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 83rd annual national convention assembled, encourage provincial and diocesan councils to urge provincial/territorial and municipal governments to further increase funding for adequate, affordable housing for low-income persons.
