Resolution 1999.02 Childhood Abuse in Institutions
Whereas, Child abuse in institutions is a significant problem that causes negative long term effects for many individuals; and
Whereas, As an increasing number of survivors of institutional child abuse reach adulthood, governments have become concerned about how to address the harms committed; and
Whereas, The Law Commission of Canada in its attempt to “heal the harm” has suggested various redress processes, including providing “access to therapy and counseling” for survivors of institutional child abuse; therefore be it
Resolved, That the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 79th annual national convention assembled: commend the federal minister of justice for the initiative to “heal the harm” for survivors of institutional child abuse; and urge the federal minister of justice to make available resources for survivors of institutional child abuse who wish to access therapy and counseling.
