Resolution 1997.04: Awareness of Another Risk Factor for Breast Cancer

Whereas, 18 out of 23 worldwide epidemiological studies, beginning in 1957 and as recently as November 1996, support the inclusion of induced abortion among significant independent risk factors to breast cancer; and

Whereas, there is no requirement in Canada that women be informed of all risks associated with abortion, including the risk of breast cancer; therefore, be it

Resolved, that the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 77th annual national convention assembled, urge the federal, provincial and territorial ministers of health and the provincial colleges of physicians and surgeons to ensure that women considering abortion be informed of the possible risk of breast cancer; and be it further

Resolved, that the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 77th annual national convention assembled, collect information on the abortion/breast cancer link and make it available for use in parish councils for study of the issue and to create individual and community awareness programs.
