Resolution 1996.03 Advance Directives for Health Care

Whereas, and individual’s rights in health care decisions may be protected by: an advance directive for health care which instructs doctors and family members about treatment when an individual loses his/her decision-making capacity; and a durable power of attorney that specifies an appointee to make health care decisions on behalf of the individual; and

Whereas, extraordinary means to sustain life are not required by the Catholic Church; therefore, be it

Resolved, that the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 76th annual national convention assembled, recommends that councils at all levels initiate education and promote awareness regarding advance directives for health care and durable powers of attorney, through workshops or seminars.
