Notice of Nomination for Life Membership
You did not choose me, but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. (John 15:16)
Greetings, my dear sisters in The League
The summer holidays are waning and it will soon be time for us to return to more routine activities. After a well-deserved break and an opportunity for women nationwide to attend the 96th annual national convention in Halifax, Nova Scotia members are invigorated and ready to go where God leads them. I, like you, am learning the new role that has been given me, and am renewing knowledge of the many jewels in the League’s cache of material. It is an ongoing process and I wish you every success as members strive to live the life of mercy and model the Blessed Mother’s compassion and love.
Belonging to this national organization gives me a confidence that I would not have otherwise. In discerning whether to allow myself to stand for office, knowing that I would be representing thousands of fellow sisters, I considered my humble background and asked what I would bring to this position. I suspect all my sisters go through a similar process, but with the Holy Spirit’s prompting and invoking Our Lady of Good Counsel, I find myself in this position.
The League is a Catholic women’s organization begun in 1920, granted federal incorporation in 1923, affiliated with the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations (WUCWO). We know the “who” we are as stated clearly in the mission statement and the “why” we exist from the Objects.
Chairpersons of organization at all levels share common goals:
a) Recruit members and maintain membership: Father James Mallon, in his book Divine Renovation says we do not HAVE a mission; rather, we ARE mission. By living the life God calls us to live, by being welcoming, as the earliest members welcomed the stranger to this vast country, by inviting all women 16 years of age and older, by being concerned more about “feeding” women than by simply adding members, the membership will follow. I have read of brilliant programs and speakers who have fed parishioners; they may want to join as a result. Educate, educate, educate with small helpings of information about what the League is and what it does; it will entice women to join..
Get your materials together: the Constitution & Bylaws, the updated National Manual of Policy and Procedure, Executive Handbook, and Handbook for Organization Chairpersons. Orientation materials tailored for women in the parish, but which give a sense of the League, will be welcomed by prospective and new members. Check the website for updates and go forward in faith and action for faith, fun and fulfillment (the three essential – and equally timed – parts of each meeting: spiritual program, social interaction and essential business).
b) Leadership development: National council offers assistance for leadership development through its National Development Fund (a council may apply for assistance once per year), but the seasoned members of parish councils are excellent resources and also to see leadership potential and nourish it. We are always preparing women for leadership roles as they learn about the joys and benefits of being members. Women will discern their roles with the help and support of other members. Ghandi’s statement, “The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problems”, may apply to us as we do what we can to the best of our ability and with Our Lady of Good Counsel’s assistance.
c) League resource material: There is such a vast array of materials available on the website at cwl.ca, including manuals, handbooks, the Constitution & Bylaws 2013 (lovingly referred to as the C&B), forms, programs and workshops under each standing committee. As we learn from these how this awesome organization came together, and how it operates, the materials act as glue to hold members together and they can be assured that the materials are reviewed as they are living documents and updated regularly. Feel free to question and make suggestions as we continue to learn.
d) Annual reports: The newly piloted annual report forms will be used this year. The parish councils will find them comprehensive in regard to their positions and easy to complete. There is also room for comments. I am excited to receive feedback once members have had an opportunity to use them. I believe this is a brilliant step forward, a step that will make reporting much simpler and much less stressful. We are women who are in step with the modern world that allows us the opportunity to use technology for good purposes.
e) Life membership: Welcome to the new life members: Elizabeth Bortolussi, Joline Belliveau, Shirley Campbell, Rolande Chernichan, June Fuller, Agnes Geiger, Mary Jean Horne, Kathy Huffman, Barbara MacFarlane, Peggy MacNeil, Ann Myers, Ella Nogier, Donna Provost, Colleen Randall, Linda Squarzolo, Toosje Van de Sande, Margaret Van Meeuwen, Wilma Vanderzwaag and Sandra Wieckowski. These women have served the League in several capacities and been nominated by their peers for their gifts and talents which have been proven in their diocesan and provincial councils. They represent a wealth of knowledge and support for the membership and thank them for their willingness to continue to serve. This year, more women will be eligible and will meet the criteria for nomination. Please review the criteria carefully, keeping in mind the new nomination procedures and nomination date of September 15th. Attached is the new notice of nomination.
May Our Lady of Good Counsel continue to bless members with a strong sense of who and why they are, and with One Heart, One Voice, One Mission: Palliative and Hospice Care may we continue to be good news to all “For God and Canada.”
Your Sister in The League,
National President-Elect and Chairperson of Organization
