Aug 22, 2022 | Spotlight

The excitement in the convention hall was palpable on Monday, August 15th as day one of the business sessions began!

In her opening remarks, National President and Chairperson of International Relations Fran Lucas, was pleased to welcome participants in person after a few years hiatus. She knew that the theme “Catholic and Living It” would be realized and grow through relationship building, as she encouraged everyone to meet and chat with one another. The Ribbons of Love initiative – 1,100 blue and yellow ribbons, prepared by the provinces, in solidarity with the Ukraine – were formed together into one large heart. All were invited to take two from the board – one for themselves and one to gift to another. National Spiritual Advisor Bishop Stephen Jensen acknowledged the strong leadership and the work of the League. Greetings and introductions were received from numerous organizations including The World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations, Canadian Catholic Organizations for Development and Peace, the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition and Catholic Missions in Canada.

The provincial presidents’ reports celebrated the resiliency, creativity and tenacity of League members as they faced numerous challenges. The strong faith of the members enabled them to continue evangelizing through acts of charity, social justice and by joining implementation committee working groups.

In her role as Executive Director, Kim Scammell, presented an informative report detailing the roles and responsibilities of the National Office staff followed by a review of the 2021 financial statements. A vote for the per capita fee increase was completed. Marie Rackley, National Secretary Treasurer, will provide more information on this in the near future.

Day one ended on a joyful note as new Life Members for the years 2020 and 2021 were commissioned!
