Communique #9 – Communications

Happy New Year to the best communicators the League has—a team working together sharing gifts and talents for the betterment of the League. The year 2020 brings us together as a team, looking forward with anticipation of celebrating the 100th anniversary. I call on each of us to ensure members are aware of the convention to be held in Montreal, August 9-12, 2020. Encourage everyone to come and celebrate!
Council Registers: How does a council notify national office of a change to its executive listing? National office requires a complete list of names for all provincial and diocesan executive members and their contact information and, for parish councils, a list of the president, treasurer, spiritual advisor and membership convenor, including their contact information. This may be done through e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org, regular mail or, for parish councils, through the online membership process.
In an election year, the president or secretary must send notification advising national office of the newly elected or appointed executive along with contact information. Throughout the year, if there is a change of contact information or position, including the spiritual advisor, notify national office as soon as possible.
Encourage your counterparts at each level to follow these steps to help improve communications!
Mailings: An issue has come to light where some councils report not receiving council mailings along with other information sent from national office. The last mailing was sent via e-mail to parish council presidents on September 28, 2019. Encourage your diocesan counterpart to check if parish councils in their area received the fall mailing. The steps below indicate how the mailing should be dispersed to ensure a better flow of communication:
- If a past president receives the e-mail or package containing the parish council information, she passes it on to the current parish council president as soon as possible and asks her to advise national office of the change in position.
- Once the parish council president receives the information, it is her responsibility to separate the information and pass it on to the respective officers and chairpersons.
- The officers or chairpersons, in turn, share the information in a short report with members at the next parish council meeting, or as soon as possible.
- Date sensitive information is required to be shared in a timely manner as necessary.
Implementation Committee (IC) Update: Remember to look on the national website, cwl.ca, under quick links, Implementation of the Strategic Plan and scroll to Implementation Committee Updates to see the monthly update on the IC’s progress and perhaps what is in store for the future. Also, you may know a member whose talent the IC team could use. It is important to ensure grassroots members are taking part in the working groups. Their help is needed to ensure the IC team includes as much input as possible. There is another call from the IC for help. Find the information on the website, share it with members and encourage them to participate.
Annual Reports: Provincial chairpersons’ annual reports are due March 15, 2020. If you have completed your report, I would be happy to receive it earlier. I look forward to receiving the reports containing all the work done by your provincial council over the past year. Thank you for all the work accomplished “For God and Canada.”
Mass on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Good Counsel: The League is sponsoring a mass for its 100th anniversary for members, deceased members and spiritual advisors on Sunday, April 26, 2020, televised by Daily TV Mass. The taping of the mass will be held Monday, April 6th, at 5:00 p.m. at Loretto Abbey Chapel located at 101 Mason Blvd., Toronto, Ontario. Inform members and invite them to attend if they are in the area. I encourage those attending to wear the League scarf or something to identify as a member. It would be nice if those attending could sit together, preferably in an area where those at home may view them, as they will be the representatives at this mass.
Lenten Newsletter: One of the provincial councils used an Advent theme for its last newsletter. Perhaps consider a Lenten theme for your next newsletter, asking members to include something on Lent, a reflection or an activity. Please share with us by sending to email@example.com to have it posted in On the Spot.
