Greetings my friends,

On January 19th, provincial presidents met virtually with National President Anne-Marie Gorman, National President-Elect and Chairperson of Organization Fran Lucas, National Secretary-Treasurer Janet McLean and me to receive feedback concerning the possibility of deferring the proposed amendments and per capita fee increase. Subsequently, the national executive/board was polled, and a decision was made to delay voting on these two issues until the annual national meeting of members in August 2022.

Councils at all levels have been advised from the beginning to honour the existing bylaws to the degree that they are able. Executives at all levels were encouraged to make their own determination about how best to conduct the vote given local health restrictions and the willingness of members to meet in person.

With this decision by the board to defer the vote until August 2022, it will allow parish councils the opportunity to delay voting until they feel it is safe to do so. If councils feel they are already prepared to conduct the vote, they are free to do so, but the timeline has been extended for those who do not feel it is in the best interest of members nor the amendment process to meet at this time. So, the national vote will occur in August 2022, which precipitates that all parish council votes need to be completed by March 2022 for the process to be completed on time.

The input and feedback of members are essential. The opportunity to discuss and make informed decisions is extremely important, as is the safety and security of members at all levels.

The prayerful discernment of the board in offering this option and the participation of all members in determining the future of the League is valued. We must live in hope, for “…we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” (Romans 5. 3-5)
