Communique #7 – Community Life
National Chairperson of Community Life Marie Rackley, September 6, 2019
Greetings League sisters,
I am pleased to welcome six new provincial chairpersons of community life Theresa Hickey (Alberta Mackenzie), Marian Zsombor (Saskatchewan), Mary Capobianco (Ontario), Mavis McLaren (Manitoba), Carol Lynn St. James Fascia (Quebec) and Betty White (Newfoundland and Labrador). Welcome back to Lise Belanger (Military Ordinariate), Donna McIver (Prince Edward Island), Doris Dickson (New Brunswick), Susan Steiner (B.C. & Yukon) and Catherine Gonsalves (Nova Scotia). These chairpersons will complete their term in 2020.
For new chairpersons, I am a 48-year member at the Immaculate Conception Parish Council in Saint John, New Brunswick and joined the League as a third-generation member.
Throughout the years I served at the parish, diocesan, provincial and national level. In 2014 I received life membership—a great honour for being a member of an organization that helped me become the person I am today and enriches my life.
I am currently co-chairperson for the 2023 national convention in Saint John, New Brunswick. I retired from the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Saint John in 2016 as controller, a position I held for 31 years.
Community life is an interesting and informative standing committee where actions speak volumes. It is our responsibility to actively help our brothers and sisters in Canada and overseas, sharing our talents, supporting them with love and justice and opposing discrimination.
Current issues include 1% for Development and Peace program, Canada Summer Jobs program, Bill C-262 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, human trafficking, the Catholic Near East Welfare Association and more. Stay tuned for additional information.
If your province is working on a special project, let us know. Let us share the good work, stand together united in God’s love as we continue to serve his people. May Our Lady of Good Counsel continue to bless and guide us on our journey.
Your sister in Christ,
Marie C. Rackley
National Chairperson of Community Life
