Communique #18 – Communications
National Second Vice-President and Chairperson of Communications Doreen Gowans, March 16, 2021
Dear League sisters and Bishop Jensen,
“In Lent, may we be increasingly concerned with ‘speaking words of comfort, strength, consolation and encouragement, and not words that demean, sadden, anger or show scorn’” (Pope Francis).
Blind Carbon Copy (BCC): With permission, I am enclosing a document written by Life Member and Ontario Provincial Past President Anne Madden. Some provincial councils have adopted this as part of their council’s manual of policy and procedure. If your council does not have this in place, perhaps you would like to review it and see if it is something you may wish to adopt as part of your council’s policy.
National Website: Several marketing initiatives have been launched. To Inspire, a new section added to the website, includes several short videos and scripts for all to view, like and share. Share the link (cwl.ca/to-inspire/) with members, family and friends to inform them through the many stories of what the League is and what members do. Connect with the League through cwl.ca, Facebook, Twitter and e-mail.
Selfies: The marketing group invites members to share their stories by responding to “My CWL Is…” and complete their personal League story. Ask your diocesan counterparts to encourage members to record themselves on a cell phone, computer, tablet or another appropriate device—a short one-minute video about what the League means to them or why they joined, what they like, etc. The words “my CWL is” should be included in the video and then posted to the member’s personal Facebook or Instagram page using the hashtag #WhatsYourCWL.
Implementation Committee: Encourage your diocesan counterparts to remind members to view the national website for monthly updates on the strategic plan, what’s new and what can be expected. Find these updates under Quick Links, Implementation of the Strategic Plan.
Fall League Magazine: A reminder that The Canadian League will be published online only. You may want to encourage your diocesan counterparts to suggest councils print off a copy and mail it to members who do not have Internet access. If a council is struggling financially, perhaps one of its members would gladly sponsor a member by donating the printing and mailing cost to the council.
ZOOM Meetings: For your information, in the spring parish mail out there is a step-by-step ‘how to’ for parish councils to host Zoom meetings. If you would like a copy, let me know, and I will send it to you.
Our Lady of Good Counsel Mass has been booked and will take place on April 26th at Loretto Abbey. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, in-person attendance is not permitted; however, members will be able to view it on Salt + Light TV.
Encouragement: “One of the most beautiful gifts in the world is the gift of encouragement. When someone encourages you, that person helps you over a threshold you might otherwise never have crossed on your own.” (John O’Donohue, Eternal Echoes: Celtic Reflections on Our Yearning to Belong).
May Our Lady of Good Counsel guide us always, as together we work “For God and Canada.”
Love and prayers,
National Chairperson of Communications
