Communique #14 – Community Life

June 15, 2020

National Chairperson of Community Life Marie Rackley, June 15, 2020.

My dear sisters in the League,

I hope this communique finds you well and adjusting to the changes implemented to keep healthy and safe. Though one may wonder if things will ever be the same, the important things in life will never change.

Due to COVID-19, members have experienced the loss of seeing their family and participating in mass. They have missed their League friends, their way of doing community service, and their ability to be free to go and roam within their community. What members have done though, is find new ways to communicate, through Zoom and Facetime with loved ones, e-mailing their League friends and families, sending packages and cards for a special surprise, and by participating in local masses online or on television. Members have adapted the way they engage in community service by reaching out to those in need, donating items to food banks, going shopping and picking up prescriptions for those unable to venture out, baking those special cookies to say thank you, and the list goes on.

Through all this, members have not forgotten those outside of Canada, who also suffer from a lack of clean water, food, medical supplies—and their list goes on too.

Care for Our Common Home – Year Two Project
I am pleased to inform you the League’s goal of raising $5,500 USD ($7,500 CDN) for the Pieta Bhavan Project has been reached. These funds will go towards a new well cover for Pieta Bhavan residents.

To date, members have raised more than $11,000, with the balance slated for a second project, “feeding the school children of the Adigrat Diocese in Ethiopia” as approved at the winter national executive/board meeting in Toronto. Please encourage councils to donate to this worthy cause. The project will continue until December 31st.

Day of Pray for the Holy Land & Middle East
After much discussion, a permanent date—September 21st, the International Day of Peace—was chosen as a National Day of Prayer for Christians in the Holy Land. Each year on this date, members will offer prayers for their Christian sisters and brothers living in the Holy Land and the Middle East.

I would like to expand on this special day by including the Prayer for Peace in the Holy Land prayer card, which can be circulated to parish councils through the provincial and diocesan councils. Along with this beautiful prayer card, there is information on the Peace Lamps for Holy Land Christians, which can be lit at meetings, special occasions, prayers and more. If interested in ordering a lamp, please contact the Catholic Near East Welfare Association. All funds raised are returned to the community that makes these lamps as a fundraiser.

I hope to be able to arrange for some of the lamps to be available at the national convention in Toronto in August 2021.

Although unable to celebrate the 100th annual national convention in Montreal this August, the League is alive and national, provincial and diocesan executives are working hard for the membership.

May Our Lady of Good Counsel bless each and every one of you and your families as you continue to share your talents for the people of God. I will leave you this quote from St. Mother Teresa: “One thing I ask of you: Never be afraid of giving. There is a deep joy in giving, since what we receive is much more than what we give” (St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, In the Heart of the World: Thoughts, Stories and Prayers).
