“Seeing with the eyes of Christ, I can give to others much more than their outward necessities; I can give them the look of love which they crave” (Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est).

In tribute to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who passed away on December 31, 2022, Pope Francis said, “With emotion we remember him as such a noble, such a gentle person… And we feel so much gratitude in our hearts: gratitude to God for having given him to the church and to the world; gratitude to him, for all the good he accomplished, particularly for his witness of faith and prayer, especially in these last years of his retired life.” Please pray for the repose of his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed.

Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA)

A thank you letter has been received from CNEWA for donations to the national voluntary fund of $10,680.45 and $2,560 for the relief efforts in Ukraine, collected at the 2022 national convention in Kelowna. The letter states, “Many thanks for the support of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, which is helping Christians in the Holy Land and in Ukraine through CNEWA. Together, we are making a difference.”

Domestic Violence Webinar

Domestic violence costs lives, takes a toll on those harmed, affects adults and children and costs Canadians billions of dollars.

In a Statistics Canada report entitled Spousal violence in Canada, 2019, previous research conducted by the Public Health Agency of Canada is summarized as follows.

“Violence in the context of an intimate partner or spousal relationship can have immediate and long-term adverse physical and psychological consequences for victims, and children who are exposed to such violence have higher rates of violent victimization later in life. Further, in addition to individual impacts, there is a public cost of such violence for communities and society as a whole as health care, social support and legal systems must respond.”

To educate and inform, the League is pleased to host a webinar titled “WE Can Do Better! Domestic Violence in Canada.”

Date: Saturday, February 11, 2023

Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CST

Nominal Cost: $5.00 per registrant. The proceeds will be donated to Willow Place.

This webinar is open to everyone. Please encourage those you know to attend and gain valuable information on a topic that affects women and children daily. Refer to the attached poster for complete details.

National Ribbon Skirt Day

January 4th was the first National Ribbon Skirt Day in Canada. Bill S-219 An Act respecting a National Ribbon Skirt Day, received Royal Assent on December 15, 2022. It “designates the 4th day of January in each and every year as ‘National Ribbon Skirt Day.’ Please ask your diocesan counterparts to encourage members to review the bill at parl.ca/Content/Bills/441/Private/S-219/S-219_4/S-219_4.PDF and mark their calendars for January 4, 2024.

Provincial chairpersons are asked to ensure this communiqué is directed to the next level and to guarantee the grassroots members at the parish level receive the information. As Catholic[s] and Living It!, members need to be educated and informed on this topic that could be happening to a family member, neighbour, co-worker or friend. It is in your hands to ensure the success of this webinar.
