Communique #12 – Spiritual Development
National First Vice-President and Chairperson of Spiritual Development Shari Guinta, June 1, 2021
“As Jesus was filled with joy in the Holy Spirit, may our joy by the power of the same Spirit make us set our sight on the things of God’s kingdom.” (A Year with Pope Francis: Daily reflections from his writings)
A month of prayer through the rosary for the end of the global COVID-19 pandemic has just concluded. Many parishes across Canada and around the world participated. I hope many members took part in viewing these prayers and participated within their parish councils. Please ask your diocesan counterparts to pass on my encouragement to members and councils to continue in prayer.
I wanted to draw your attention to a few of the various resources available.
Dr. Josephine Lombardi has written, produced and directed a film about Mary and women, The First Lady and Her Successors. It premiered on May 13th and aims to deepen the connection of the viewer with Our Lady. I invite you to visit Dr. Lombardi’s website (josephinelombardi.com) to find out more. You may recall Dr. Lombardi as a guest speaker at various League conventions. She is presently associate professor of systematic and pastoral theology and director of lay formation at St Augustine’s Seminary in Scarborough, Ontario.
The Year of St. Joseph concludes on December 8, 2021. Please ask your diocesan counterparts to encourage parish councils to find a way to honour the earthly father of Jesus by way of prayer or special activity.
The 107th World Day of Migrants and Refugees will be celebrated on September 26th. The theme of Pope Francis’ Message is Towards an ever wider “we.” Migrants risk their lives to come to a country to work and struggle to make a better life for themselves and their families, often going years without seeing their loved ones. Share this information with your diocesan counterparts as members might want to investigate this issue, pray for migrants worldwide and become knowledgeable about their plight. More information can be found on the Canadian Conference of Catholic of Bishops website, cccb.ca.
An interesting resource is from Most. Rev. Robert Barron (Auxiliary Bishop, Los Angeles) is Word on Fire (wordonfire.org). I have mentioned this before, but there are many resources through this ministry, including presentations, videos and courses.
A few dates to remember:
- June 12th – Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary
- August 6th – Transfiguration of the Lord
