As many of you will know, at the national convention in Winnipeg earlier this month I was re-elected for a second term as national secretary-treasurer. I am grateful for the trust shown in me and I will do my best for the League during the next two years. I would like to extend a sincere welcome to all secretaries and treasurers who assumed office at their provincial conventions this past spring as well as those who are beginning their second year in office. I always think of secretaries and treasurers as the backbone of a council – where would they be without us? You will find the oral report which I gave at the national convention attached to this communiqué. If you have questions with respect to the report or on any League matters pertaining to your position, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to assist you.
For those of you who do not know me, I have been a League member for over 30 years and I am still very active in my parish council in downtown Montreal. I began my business career as a legal secretary and progressed to office and personnel manager and then senior accountant in the same legal firm. I have been retired for almost four years and keep busy with League work and some part-time accounting work. I also enjoy swimming all year, vegetable gardening and Scottish country dancing.

During the last two years I have been working on revisions to the Handbook for Secretaries and the Guideline for Treasurers. The League had hoped to have new software for the online membership system in place for this year and I was going to include updated information on the new system in the revisions to the Guideline for Treasurers. Because of major problems in acquiring the new software, we will be remaining with our current online membership system for the next two years so I will complete my proposed revisions based on this system.

These are exciting times for the League as we begin the implementation of the strategic plan that was accepted at the 2018 annual national convention. I hope you feel, as I do, that the League is a force to be reckoned with and, as we approach our centenary, the best is yet to come.

With my prayers and best wishes,

Janet McLean
National Secretary-Treasurer
