Communications Communique #8
National Second Vice-President and Chairperson of Communications Shari Guinta, July 24, 2018
“It is said that we are ‘children of information and orphans of communication.’”
A Year with Pope Francis, Daily Reflections from His Writings
This will be my final communique for the standing committee of communications. It has been an awesome experience and I have learned a lot. My hope is that the new chairpersons of communications review past communiques to carry on with the issues and ideas regarding technology as well as pornography.
I want to mention the success and popularity of On the Spot!, which started at the beginning of my term. Encourage parish councils to send in a picture(s) with a brief description to national office of a council activity they want highlighted. There have been some amazing activities shared from across the country. On the Spot! is not for personal awards or to highlight a member; it is to feature a council activity. I know there has been some confusion regarding this. It is such a joy to emphasize, very quickly, activities within councils for members to see!
In previous communiques I mentioned the positive aspects of the Internet and the variety of exciting technology available. There are many positives to the use of Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and websites. I have seen in reports that many parish councils across the country make use of these tools, and I encourage councils to investigate what can be done with technology to recruit and inform members. The League must evolve if it is to survive.
Live streaming for the annual national convention in Winnipeg will be provided, and I am pleased to announce that arrangements have been made to telecast the keynote address of Archbishop Murray Chatlain (Keewatin-Le Pas) on the topic Listen Slowly: Women Guided by the Spirit. The telecast will be available via a link on the national website on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 from 1:45-4:15 p.m. CDT. (Newfoundland and Labrador at 4:15-6:45 p.m.; Maritimes at 3:45-6:15 p.m.; Ontario and Quebec at 2:45-5:15 p.m.; Saskatchewan and Alberta at 12:45-3:15 p.m.; and British Columbia at 11:45 a.m.-2:15 p.m.) I invite you to “tune in” and to encourage members to do likewise. Visit cwl.ca.
Some exciting news that I wish to share is the revamp of the national website. The League has been working with a website design company on updating the look and navigation of the website. The website will be launched just prior to the convention. Due to the popular use of hand held technology, an update was felt to be necessary so that the website would be easier to navigate and view on various devices. Encourage members to view the website often.
