Christian Family Life Communique #8
National Chairperson of Christian Family Life Doreen Gowans, June 22, 2018
Marriage and Family:
“We talk about diversified families: different types of families. But the human family as an image of God, man and woman, is only one. It is only one” (Pope Francis).
Currently the family unit is being destroyed. Please pray, pray and pray some more, and promote family life along with family activities in parishes and communities.
Petition of One Million 2019: As it has been brought to my attention that many members are not aware of this project, I am repeating this information and asking for your assistance. Petition of One Million 2019 is a project to gather one million plus signatures to be presented to the federal government in support of pro-life issues across Canada. Unfortunately four million children have been killed by abortion since 1969, but they can be recognized by every signature that is collected. Proclaim to all Canadians that every life must be protected from conception to natural death. Invite members to visit petitionofonemillion.ca/sign-petition/ to download and print the signature page. Ensure that the disclaimer is followed in order to have the signatures count. Please e-mail Alliance for Life Ontario at email@example.com or call (866) 588-2684 with any questions.
Encourage councils to take action by using this project in parishes and communities. Alliance for Life Executive Director Jakki Jeffs will have an exhibit table at the annual national convention along with a copy of the petition for those who have not already signed it. Signed petitions may be brought to the convention where she will be happy to receive them.
Sanctity of Life: Euthanasia Prevention Coalition Executive Director Alex Schadenberg will also be attending the convention. He is bringing the “Don’t Kill Me. I Oppose Euthanasia” bracelets that can be acquired for a donation. Encourage members to consider obtaining enough to take back to their councils. In addition, the DVD Fatal Flaws: Legalizing Assisted Death will be available.
Youth: Author and speaker Denise Mountenay from Together for Life Ministries will have an exhibit table at the annual national convention as well. Please encourage members to stop by to find out more information about the award winning DVD HUSH, a documentary about abortion and women’s health. Denise is the author of national best seller FORGIVEN, a true story as well as The Bride, The Serpent & The Seed, which aims to educate youth and young adults on the reality of abortion. Consider inviting her to speak at your provincial convention or meeting. Her passionate message encourages people to bring value and honour to motherhood and all of humanity; giving God the glory.
Children and the Internet: In Pope Francis’ homily at Casa Santa Marta, he warns against the dangers of technology for children. “There are many curiosities, for example, in the virtual world, with mobile phones and other things. Children visit sites curious to see and they come across many terrible things. There is no discipline in that curiosity. We must help young people live in this world, so the desire to know does not become a desire for curiosity that makes them end up prisoners of this curiosity.” The pope suggests asking the Holy Spirit for guidance when problems arise and difficult decisions are needed.
2018 Synod of Bishops: themed Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment will take place beginning October 28, 2018. Please pray for successful deliberations on the many topics outlined by 300 youth, who took part in informing the pre-synodal committee of their concerns. The outline contains several points including: the old and new challenges of young people, the family, sexuality, and the search for community. It also analyzes the youth’s perception of the Church and what they want from it. Look for the results of the Synod this fall.
Thank you to my two excellent sub-committee chairpersons life members Glenda Klein and Margaret McCallum, as well as to all the Christian family life chairpersons across Canada. I appreciate the help and dedication to the League and for your support. Together we are a committed team doing our part to keep members informed on current issues pertaining to this standing committee. May God bless you!
Your sister in Christ,
National Chairperson of Christian Family Life
