1997.09 Restorative Justice Programs for Young Offenders

Whereas, young persons who commit offenses should bear responsibility for their crimes; and

Whereas, communities have a vested interest in raising responsible citizens; and

Whereas, Section 4 of the Young Offenders Act provides that, in appropriate circumstances, youth can be dealt with other than through the court process and that these alternative measures, such as restorative justice programs, are under-utilized; therefore be it

Resolved, that the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 77th annual national convention assembled, urge the federal government, through financial and other appropriate means of support, to promote programs such as the Restorative Justice Program; and be it further

Resolved, that the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 77th annual national convention assembled, urge the federal government to develop and implement an awareness campaign to educate the public on restorative justice programs; and be it further

Resolved, that the national council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada, in 77th annual national convention assembled, urge the federal government, urge members to educate themselves and consider support for the restorative justice programs in their own communities.
