Earthquake in Haiti
A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Tuesday, January 12
th leaving Port-au-Prince, the capital city in ruins. Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told CNN Wednesday the death toll from the earthquake that rocked his country could be "well over 100,000."

On January 14
th, President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops Pierre Morissette, issued an “Appeal to the Pastors and Faithful of the Catholic Church in Canada” in which he notes that one third of Haiti’s population, some three million people are in dire need of disaster relief. Bishop Morissette reported that at the end of the General Audience on January 14
th, “Pope Benedict XVI called for international generosity and solidarity toward our Haitian brothers and sisters who are suffering and in need, and gave his assurances that the Catholic Church will provide immediate and urgent assistance.”

The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace has organized an emergency appeal and is working with Caritas Haiti that runs 200 established medical clinics in the country. All donations will be sent to partners on site in Haiti.
