2008 Annual Report of
Manitoba Provincial Council
Suzanne Kiazyk, Provincial President

Offering support, meeting challenges, giving affirmation and offering welcoming hospitality – that is precisely what League sisters in Manitoba accomplished so well this year! What an enriching experience members had in hosting the 88 th annual national convention and the World Union of Catholic Women's Organizations North American Regional Conference. Under the direction of chairperson Janet Brunger, her co-chairpersons and Rev. Barry Schoonbaert, parish councils played a large part in welcoming and making these events memorable for guests.

When reading the three diocesan council reports it was amazing to see the work that was accomplished even though the emphasis was on hosting the national convention.

Keewatin -The Pas Diocesan Council President Ella Nogier challenged sisters in the North to reflect on these points: What role does the CWL have in your spirituality? Do you sense that you have been chosen and loved by these women? By the end of the day communicate to someone how precious they are to you.

Like many parish, diocesan, and provincial councils, filling executive positions was sometimes a challenge. However, St. Boniface Diocesan Council President Rolande Chernichan stated, "With patience and perseverance, with faith and hope, and with generous love and collaboration by the members of the executive, our diocesan council is nearing one year of service, and we are still going strong!" Members were affirmed and encouraged to serve through leadership beyond the parish level.

Winnipeg Archdiocesan Council President Albertine Moran reported that parish councils focused and educated members on the issues of euthanasia, human trafficking and homelessness. League development was another priority. Workshops provided opportunity for growth and educational development. Members were given the opportunity to participate in these workshops in order to enhance their knowledge of the League and develop leadership abilities.

Accomplishments
Manitoba ended the year with 2,833 active members in 2008. Thirty-three sisters went to their heavenly rewards. The diocesan presidents' reports were hopeful as they noted important areas of positive growth. Accomplishments included watching the personal growth of executive members, the success of a diocesan council's League development team, observing a council's Web site take shape, and holding resolutions and mini-workshops for all to attend.

Challenges
Diocesan presidents continued facing the challenge of the transient nature of members in small towns, especially those affected by work layoffs and closures; and keeping meetings balanced between spiritual, business and social aspects while adequately addressing the larger issues and actions around legislation and resolutions. One diocesan council faced a severe financial crisis prompting a review of policies and expenditures.

Has the provincial council met its goals over the last two years?

  • Team leadership – affirming, visiting and encouraging those who struggled to keep going.
  • Fun, Faith and Fulfillment – enjoying the companionship of League sisters, praying for and with each other and encouraging them to fulfill their expectations.
  • Promotion of League activities and objectives.
